Raleigh Community: Historic Oakwood
![]() The minute you step onto one of Historic Oakwood's tree-lined streets all images of the mad morning commute, Crabtree Valley Mall's nightmarish parking and bland suburban neighborhoods disappear. In its place rambling porches, purple-painted cupolas and verdant gardens emerge from the lush greenery of massive oak trees and fragrant dogwoods. This is Old Raleigh, a 20-block neighborhood of antebellum and Victorian homes that's a stone's throw from the Executive Mansion and minutes from downtown. |
Don't just do a drive-by. The best way to take in the intricate details of these restored 19th-century homes is on foot. While there take some time to walk through the equally intriguing Oakwood Cemetery and have a look at the Executive Mansion on Blount Street. Best time to visit: Take a spring garden tour and view Oakwood at its most exquisite or bundle up in December for the neighborhood's annual Christmas Candlelight tour.
